Ugo La Pietra was born in Bussi sul Tirino (Pescara) in 1938, originally from Arpino (Frosinone). He lives and works in Milan, where he graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico in 1964. An architect by training, he is also an artist, filmmaker, editor, musician, cartoonist, and teacher. Since 1960, he has defined himself as a researcher in the field of communication and visual arts, working simultaneously in the realms of art and design. A tireless experimenter, he has explored various movements (from sign painting to conceptual art, from narrative art to artist cinema) and utilized multiple media, developing research that led to the theory of the “Disequilibrating System” – an independent expression within Radical Design – and addressing significant sociological themes such as “The Telematic House” (MoMA New York, 1972 – Fiera di Milano, 1983), “The Relationship Between Real and Virtual Space” (Triennale di Milano 1979, 1992), “The Neo-Eclectic House” (Abitare il Tempo, 1990), and “Beach Culture” (Centro Culturale Cattolica, 1985/95). He has communicated his work through numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad, including various editions of the Triennale di Milano, the Venice Biennale, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon, FRAC Museum in Orléans, the Faenza Ceramics Museum, the Ragghianti Foundation in Lucca, the Mudima Foundation in Milan, and the MA*GA Museum in Gallarate. He has consistently promoted the humanistic, meaningful, and territorial aspects of art and design through his works and objects, as well as through his theoretical, teaching, and editorial activities.
